Will, the Earl of Chadboarn, has come to help his widowed sister with her mishandled estate. His nephew, the new Duke, is only 10 years old and someone must take matters in hand. Will is also horror-stricken to find that both his sister and his nephew have been mistreated by the former Duke. The property nearest to the Duke's estate is well-run and profitable. Will is intrigued when he learns that the small estate is run by Catherine Wheatley, whose father is somehow related to the former Duke. The characters of both the hero and the heroine are well developed. The secondary characters, for the most part, are well done. Catherine's brothers are charming scamps and their antics are a bright spot. Because this is a novellla, there really isn't enough time to really get to know and understand the Earl's sister. Her opiate addiction is taken care of a little too quickly to be realistic. (And I really wanted to see the old butler thrown out on his ear!!) However, I found this to be an enjoyable read and I intend to sample more of this author's work.No language or sexual situations to offend any readers

a wonderful romance between Will and Catherine two unlikely people to fall in love. He was an Earl trying to salvage the mess his dead brother in law left. You get a sweet romance that has a Christmas theme but a good story at any time.The children keep you laughing they helped make the book. The proposal was unusual but the HEA was gotten. This book was a quick, easy and fun read despite some of the harsher aspect of reality also dealt with in the story.
I loved the unusual strength of industry portrayed by the female lead.
The gentleness and strength of the male lead was very heartwarming, especially contrasted with other male characters in the story.
Reading this book was a lovely way to unwind, smile at the antics of the children in the story and change gear for the weekend.
This book is a very enjoyable read. Although it is very short, the plot is neatly done. I liked both Will and Catherine’s characters. Maybe Cath was made a little too perfect, but she is very likable. I love how the Earl managed the mess that his brother-in-law left behind, especially his sister and his nephew. I also appreciate the humour and emotions worked into this book, and the fact that this is clean.
Not your ordinary historical romance, this one is filled with humor. Though the language is not particularly period accurate, it is not noticably off. Or, at least, it didnt bother me.
The story is far from the Scooby Doo Mystery the title implied, at least to me. I was so pleased to find it is an actual romance, sweet, warm, funny, all the things I love in a good romance, with none of the goofy 'suspense filled drama' so many authors insist on throwing in to give a little life to their romance. This one had plenty of life on its own without the silliness so many mystery writer wannabes feel compelled to add.

I enjoyed reading Warfield's Empire of Children series. The author does a lot of research for her novels. This novel although stayed in England but was still an enjoyable read. Some of the character development was weak. The h's brothers and Charles seem to veer between being a 10-year old to talking like older men. I'd recommend the book.
Will wants to care for his lands and his people but after his brother-in-law's death, he finds himself with a run-down estate ,a traumatized sister and nephew , and secrets about interesting neighbors. Catherine does not need the Earl of Chadbourn coming and upsetting her father but it doesn't seem like he is going to leave things alone. Even though this is a novella is sure did pack a lot of surprises and twist! I just loved all the strong characters in this book , the three boys did steal the show sometimes lol. The writing is just excellent and really draws you into the lives of the characters. I loved that the Will was so connected with the land and felt such a responsibility for the people on his lands. It was also so adorable how he knew the right thing to bring Catherine around.
